TADS (Thermal Animal Detection Systems)

A military quality FLIR system with the ability to detect invasive species and assist removal of target species without limitations to topography or vegetation. Also monitor endangered species like bats and Takahe.

We have a goal to restore balance in the native ecosystems.

What conservation problem are you trying to solve?

Trap and Trigger Ltd is well established in the conservation and ungulate removal industry, taking part in over 100 programs globally, including several successful eradication's.

We specialize in detection dogs for ungulate removal but we have found a stale-mate in many of New Zealand's Ungulate control operations. It seems that many long running programs have created a wary and educated population of target species, and  conventional ground hunting efforts tend to only remove the re-population rate up to 25%, therefore the decrease in population is stagnant and we are not achieving removal to low densities or taking pressure off the forest regeneration.

We have a solution to this problem with greater inefficiencies than conventional methods by covering greater land areas with higher detection and removal rates, without educating the population or having topography and vegetation limitations.

How are you going to solve this conservation problem?

With our TADS solution, Conventional hunting vs TADS

Ground Hunting generally has detection rates of 50% following dispatch rates of 50% leaving an unsuccessful encounter rate of 75%. A daily coverage is also limited to about 150 ha.

Surveying the same vegetation type, TADS has the ability to detect 90 - 100% of the current population and then remove up to 60%. These rates con only be increased with more research and better quality equipment. We can also survey up to 10,000 ha in the ideal environment.

The camera is aligned with a military grade laser pointer to assist the pilot and shooter in the direction of the detected target until it presents itself for identification and dispatch.In the right environment, we can detect ungulates at a distance of one kilometer away.  At the moment we are also working on feeding the live footage to a HD headset to fully emerge us in the cameras view therefore giving higher ability of detection. 

What makes your idea new and unique?

Our thermal idea is not the first world for thermal technology has been round for over two decades, therefore making it not entirely original. However, we have studied trials and methods and created an innovative concept based on their limitations such as increasing the field of view or increasing clarity through pixel density and tracking systems through surface temperature readings and, and mobility with our free floating harness system. We obtained a permit to import and industrial laser to turn our detection device into a tracking and removal system.

As far as we know, we are the only independant company in newzealand to inverst in such high quallity equipment with a sole purpose toward consrevation.

Who will use your idea, and how will they benefit?

Our concept can be used by:

- Regional councils for urban pest removal

- DOC for island sanctuaries, or ungulate control

- TB-free for possum and pig surveying

- SAR for search and rescue purposes

- Private land owners with pest animal problems.

We are not just limited to removal for we can also monitor endangered species.

Our goal is to provide another innovative tool for conservation to assist pest eradication on our large off shore islands to provide eco-sanctuaries for endemic species. 

What tasks or activities do you need investment for? How would you spend a $25,000 grant?

If we receive a grant, we will put it toward either paying off the TADS which has cost us over $100,000 or we will put the money aside for further research and improvements to our concept.

Anywhere, Anytime DNA diagnostics: Many eradication projects we have undertaken rely on the results of DNA testing. The only limitation at the moment is time and costs which can surely be improved.

Restoration drone for waterways: Working in the field, the worst waterway polution is caused by urban areas clogging our streams with plastic watse. It seems most of this polution happened a decade ago but the clean up still has to happen.

Predator proof bird nest boxes: The greatest battle against saving our highly endangered species is fending off predators during nesting. this concept could help restore populations and could also be advanced to suit ground birds.

The drone ranger: Like our project is an effeciant and sensitive idea for tetcting pests over large areas. 

The urban rat project: The best way to have conservation moving foward is to have communities engaged and seeing the benifits. This idea has huge potential not just to get behind conservation but to also have an impact on predators and see the benifits.

How could you improve your idea?

Our greatest limitation to improving our idea is through funding and support. Our aim when submitting our idea was to first spread the word which gains support, also giving us the possibility of gaining some funding.

We are in the process of connecting a pair of HD drone fying goggles to our FLIR unit. What this means is we will have greater emersion in the screen with the clearst possible picture allowing us to see more and miss less. Alos the goggles have head tracking technology, this means we can sync the goggles with videography motor mounts so that we can manually control the camera with our head movment. This will give us greater angles of vision and will also allow the FLIR operator to be hands free making the tracking phase easier.

Aswell as improving our idea, we are also interested on trailing it on other species like ferral cats, if proven sucsessfull, we may the be able to apply our service to the Aucland islands Cat and Pig eradication.

Great investment, The DOC cullers have been working on the Taranaki goat eradication for over 30 years and they still haven't got them all. Maybe this technology could help finish the eradication?

Question, I understand, thermal imaging is a common use for recreational hunting, what is the difference between these recreational units as opposed to yours?

Good Question Zac,
Our thermal unit has a pixel density of 1042 x 768 which is on average twice as clear as recreational units it can also detect temperature changes down to .03 of a degree. It also has the ability to detect heat signatures the size of a coffee mug at 250m! Its interchangeable lenses makes it very adaptable or different Fields of application. It also has wide fields of view for greater coverage ability.

Also within the ability to display the temperature of different animals means we can predict the animal species by the surface temperature even when we cannot visually identify it.

Another tool in the toolbox. Ideas like these need innovative teams like Trap and Trigger to take the plunge and get them off the ground, only through proper field use can any issues be found and resolved making use in future operations more viable. Many companies or organisations will be cautious until they can see the results from previous operations and only then will they want to take part. The element of risk on Trap and Triggers part must be enormous and I take my hat off to them for doing this. Its easy to stick to the status quo but we need to get to keep progressing to get out of the stalemate we are currently in

Thanks for the support Bill, Yes we have had significant experience on the ground as hunter and have done the research with our idea and the comparisons favor thermal imaging considerably.

It has soaked up the companies resources and finances but i am sure the communities will get behind our passion to get us off the ground.

If you can achieve those statistics in canopy forest, i assume you will have far greater success in tussock and scrub-land?

Yes the FLIR is best used in scrub and tussock country, you can also cover a lot more country than forest canopy. We were trailing the canopy forests so that we could run comparisons with ground hunting.
